Vacancy Announcement: Dean, School of Medicine
The University for Development Studies (UDS), Tamale, invites applications from suitably qualified persons for the position of DEAN, SCHOOL OF MEDICINE.
A. THE POSITION
The Dean is the academic and administrative head of the School of Medicine and shall report to the Vice Chancellor in the discharge of his/her duties. The successful candidate will provide visionary leadership to advance academic quality, research productivity, clinical training, and community impact in alignment with the University’s strategic objectives.
B. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Dean will:
- Provide strategic leadership to promote excellence in teaching, research, clinical training, professional practice, and community engagement.
- Oversee the development, accreditation, implementation, and periodic review of academic programmes in compliance with applicable regulatory standards.
- Foster a dynamic research environment by encouraging grant acquisition, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the development of international partnerships.
- Lead staff development initiatives through mentorship, succession planning, and robust performance management systems.
- Ensure sound financial stewardship and support sustainable resource mobilisation for the school.
- Strengthen partnerships with regulatory bodies, healthcare institutions, government agencies, professional associations, and global collaborators.
- Ensure strict adherence to University Statutes, policies, ethical standards, and quality assurance frameworks.
C. QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE
Applicants must possess:
- A PhD or equivalent professional fellowship in a recognised medical specialty.
- A distinguished record of scholarship, clinical practice, and academic leadership within a recognized university or teaching hospital.
- Substantial post-qualification experience in medical education, research, and clinical practice.
- Demonstrated leadership in a senior academic or clinical management role within a medical school or health-related institution.
- Proven expertise in resource mobilisation, financial management, grant acquisition, and partnership development.
- Strong evidence of stakeholder engagement with regulatory bodies, professional associations, government agencies, and international partners.
D. THE APPLICANT
In addition, the ideal candidate must:
- Hold the rank of Professor
- Be a practising clinician
- Be a registered medical practitioner in good standing with the Ghana Medical and Dental Council
- Be a member of a recognised professional medical association/body.
- Be eligible to serve a full three (3) year term before attaining the statutory retirement age of sixty (60).
E. TERMS OF APPOINTMENT
The appointment shall be for an initial three (3) year term and may be renewed for one additional consecutive term only.
